City of Canton Code Enforcement Officer Nancy Serrand has been named 2008 Code Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Keep Georgia Beautiful campaign.

Serrand achieved this honor not only for her efforts in direct code enforcement, but also for other achievements as well, officials said.

Her work has included the annual "Keep Canton Clean" event to help the community by providing Dumpsters in strategic locations throughout the city with the help of Waste Management; Playful City USA which has accomplished the rebuilding of Burge Park, Art in the Park in Boling Park and an annual Playday in Heritage Park; and educational programs active in Teasley Middle, Holly Springs Elementary and Hasty Elementary schools. She would like to expand these programs to include Hickory Flat Elementary, Canton Elementary, Dean Rusk Middle, Sequoyah High and Cherokee High schools.

The Keep Georgia Beautiful Annual Awards Luncheon will be held October 23 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Serrand says she approaches code enforcement from the ideal that code enforcement is geared towards educating, protecting and securing the welfare of the community and, in doing so, maintaining property values.

Her duties as code enforcement officer include the enforcement of the sign ordinances, business licenses, assisting with building inspections on "dilapidated buildings", investigating illegal dumping, landlord/tenant issues, storm water management and watering violations.

"Most people are not aware that there are codes. Not only has that, but the economy at this time made simple efforts extraordinarily difficult," Serrand said. "It is my job to work with the residents, businesses and property owners to ensure safety and compliance through cooperation and education."
