Public Hearing Scheduled on Vehicle Parking, Equipment Law

The Cherokee County government posted information on possible changes to the county ordinance Article 8 related to vehicle and equipment parking on the government Web site, www.cherokeega.com.

A public hearing on the proposed changes before the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7.

The county commission is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. and hold a joint regular meeting with the Cherokee County-Muncipal Planning Commission meeting at 7 p.m. The meetings take place in the Justice Center, 90 North St. in downtown Canton.

According to the county Web site, the potential changes include:

  • On residentially zoned lots of 3/4 acre or larger: Allow boat and RV parking forward of the front face of the house (such as in the driveway), though not within 30 feet of any public road right-of-way. Allow one each of the following, though not within 30 feet of any public road right-of-way: a) a medium truck up to 15,000 lbs GVW and specifically including a school bus, b) a utility trailer up to 15,000 lbs capacity, and/or c) a piece of light farming or construction equipment such as a farm/landscaping tractor or Bobcat. Allow up to three unlicensed and uninsured "collector" cars or light trucks, if parked to the side or rear of the house and under a carport or fitted car cover of neutral color in good condition with no rips or holes.
  • On residentially zoned lots of 2 acres or larger (in addition to the above): Allow any farm equipment that is primarily used and reasonably needed on the property, given the size of the property and the farming operations being conducted on it.
  • On agriculturally zoned lots of 2 acres or larger (in addition to the above): No weight/capacity limits on truck and trailer. Equipment item may be heavy in nature, such as a tractor/backhoe or bulldozer. Still only one medium-to-heavy truck, trailer, and/or piece of equipment allowed, in addition to farm equipment primarily used and reasonably needed on the property.
