During the fall of 2008, work began on a house in Canton funded by Habitat for Humanity. Joseph and Lawanna Weathers and their family were honored to be recipients of this house. Lawanna Weathers is a field supervisor for Mini Maids, and Joe Weathers is a grounds keeper for the Canton Golf Course. They are the hard-working parents of two children, Justin and Madison, who attend Macedonia Elementary School. Justin is in the fourth grade, and Madison is in the first grade.
Madison's first grade class wanted to do something special for their friend and neighbor. The children knew that they couldn't help with their hands, so they thought of something that would be within their capacity. Together, they came up with the idea of "Nickels for Nails." This fundraiser was made for kids by kids! The idea was for the children of Macedonia to gather their change from home and then compile it to help with the building of the Habitat for Humanity house. Over a period of four weeks, the students of Macedonia earned over $1,100 that went towards the building of the Weather's house!
Friends and family of the Weathers have come together to help build, earn money, donate paint, and donate furniture for the house. The construction of this house is still over $12,000 short. The dedication of the Weather's house is scheduled for February 21st. The Macedonia community anxiously awaits the completion of the house and is very proud of the generosity of their children.
