Nelson House fire August 17

Firefighters from Cherokee and Pickens counties responded to a house fire in Nelson early Sunday morning. No one was injured. There was extensive damage to the interior of the house, located in the Pickens County side of the small city that straddles Cherokee and Pickens counties.

Firefighters from Cherokee and Pickens counties responded to a structure fire at 112 North Ave. in Nelson, shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday, the spokesman for the Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services said.

"When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the house full involved," said Tim Cavender, Cherokee Fire-ES director of public information.

The August 17 fire "basically gutted the interior of the structure," Cavender said.

"The homeowner stated that he had recently done some remodeling to the one story structure," Cavender said.  "Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Cavender said.

The structure is on the Pickens County side of Nelson, which is in both Cherokee and Pickens counties.
