A construction project for expanding and realigning the intersection of Trickum and Barnes roads at Little River Elementary School is expected to begin soon, according to Cherokee County Engineer Geoff Morton.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the project designed to improve traffic conditions at the school near Woodstock during its August 5 meeting. A traffic signal is at the intersection.

"This project includes improving the intersection to include realignment with the new school driveway and installation of additional right turn lane and left turn lane storage capacity," Morton said, adding the project has been coordinated with plans of the Cherokee County School District.

"Construction will begin in late August or early September," Morton said. "A majority will be completed before the end of the year."

The project was awarded to Butch Thompson Enterprises Inc., which submitted the winning $767,517 bid.

Morton said eight companies turned in bids, with the winning bid the lowest in the group. The highest bid was almost $949,200, a county document shows.

The intersection and roadways will remain open during construction, Morton said.

The project is funded by the county Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), he said.
