A Woodstock home was destroy by a fire that a 11-year-old girl discovered as she saw flames in a garage on Thursday, July 31, said Tim Cavender, director of public information for the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
Firefighters from Cherokee County Fire-ES and the Woodstock Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 5234 Willow Ridge Drive, off Hames Road near Woodstock, just after 9:30 p.m., Cavender said.
When firefighters arrived at the two-story house, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from an attached garage, said Cavender, adding county fire investigator Ossie Delay reported that a call to 911 was made when the girl noticed flames coming from a refrigerator in the garage, Cavender said.
“The 11-year-old girl and her 1-year-old brother and her 12- and 16-year-old sister and their niece, who was babysitting for the family at the time, escaped without injury,” Cavender said, adding the parents weren’t home at the time of the fire.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the family, Cavender said.
