The number of students enrolled in the Cherokee County School District was almost 37,000 at the close of the first week of the new 2008-2009 year.
Friday's Day 5 enrollment count reflects 36,949 students, an increase of 864 over the Day 1 count of 36,085 students, said Mike McGowan, director of public information, communications and partnerships.
This year's Day 5 count is a 2.5 percent increase, or 900 students, over last year's Day 5 count of 36,049 students, McGowan said.
Cherokee County schools opened Monday, August 4 for the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.
Since 2000, the student population count from Day 5 to Day 10 increased each year, from a high of 366 in 2005 to 54 in 2001, school district data shows.
Before Day 1, officials said they expected the total enrollment to reach 37,413 students, an increase of 3.13 percent over the last academic year’s 36,276.
