A 52-lot residential subdivision is proposed for a site on South McCollum Drive along the southern edge of the city of Canton's boundary, according to annexation and zoning applications filed this month in the city Community Development Department.

Documents show Canton-based WSP Development LLC is seeking annexation and rezoning for the proposed subdivision on 26.4 acres. The tract is along the northwestern side of South McCollum Drive, about 500 feet north of Univeter Road.

The proposed zoning change is from Cherokee County's Residential-20 to the city's R-2A residential classification, documents filed August 1 show.

"Because of development issues created by stream bank buffers, road right of way and topography," attorney Benson Chambers stated in a letter filed with the applications, "the Applicant is asking to rezone the property to R-2A to allow for a lot size reduction without an increase in the current allowed lot density."

According to letter from Canton Zoning Administrator Steve Green to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, a public hearing on the applications is scheduled for October 20.

The Canton Planning Commission, which holds public hearings on zoning and annexation requests, meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in Canton City Hall, 151 Elizabeth St.
