Oak Grove Elementary has been collecting change during their "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser that ran from January 12-30 and had a goal of $2,500. The amount collected will be going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to support research on blood cancers.
The counselors of Oak Grove coordinated this fundraiser in honor of one of their own students, a fourth grader named Lindsay Simmons, who has been battling Leukemia for 16 months now. Janeen Anderson, one of the counselors at the school, describes Lindsay as "a beautiful, precious and bright-smiling little girl. It breaks my heart that she or any other children have to battle such a disease. Lindsay has been so strong, resilient and optimistic--she is an inspiration and truly is a hero. I just thought this was the least we could do to show her that we love and support her."
Oak Grove will be having an assembly later this month to announce the amount raised, to announce the classrooms that raised the most money and to present the check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
