The measure passed 263-171 Friday afternoon by the House of Representatives, four days after the previous version was defeated by the House. On Wednesday, the revamped version of the $700 million plan that its supporters say is designed to improve struggling financial markets passed by a 74-25 vote.

NEARLY 2,100 MORE JOBLESS in Cherokee County last month than the same period in 2007: According to the Georgia Labor Department, Cherokee County's unemployment rate in August was 5.4 percent, the department's preliminary data released Thursday shows. The August rate was up from the revised July rate of 5.2 percent. The county rate in August 2007 was 3.6 percent.
