Postcards from Greece (March 15-22,2008)

Parth

Greece is the birthplace of western civilization. Because of this it is part of our past too. The Greek Revival style of architecture inspired my beloved Louisiana plantation houses. It was a place I was destined to visit. As Jeri Landry said with "my classic soul" she could not believe that I had not seen Greece sooner! The glory of Athens is the Acropolis and it represents the Greeks artistic climax! The Parthenon is one of the world's greatest works of architecture. It has been a ruin since 1687 when gunpowder the Turks had stored in the structure exploded during a siege. Even as a ruin it is too beautiful and too perfect and certainly more romantic. In spite of  hordes of tourists with tour guides giving tours in every language, it was awesome!  Opposite the Parthenon is the Erechtheum, one of the most original and complex buildings on the site. It is famous for its Porch of the maidens with its roof supported by female figures (caryatids). It is feminine elegance in contrast to the masculinity of the Parthenon. Two thousand years later a Turkish governor will use it to house his harem. I visualized it as a chorus line from a Broadway play.
